About Naotkamegwanning First Nation (Whitefish Bay)

Naotkamegwanning First Nation, formerly known as Whitefish Bay First Nation, is an Ojibwe community in the Lake of the Woods region of northwestern Ontario, in the heart of Treaty #3 territory.

Naotkamegwanning First Nation, known in the Ojibwe language as Ne-adikamegwaning (Of the Whitefish Point) and formerly called Whitefish Bay First Nation, is in the Lake of the Woods region of northwestern Ontario, in the heart of Treaty #3 territory. The community has year-round road access and an ice road in winter. It is a member of Grand Council Treaty #3. The Nation's reserves are:

  • Whitefish Bay 32A (the main reserve)
  • Yellow Girl Bay 32B
  • Sabaskong Bay 32C
  • Agency 30, which is shared with 12 other First Nations

Many people of Naotkamegwanning keep a close connection to the land through fishing, hunting and harvesting wild rice. The community puts importance on passing on teachings, language and cultural practices. It is home to the White Fish Bay Singers, a champion drum since 1989 who help keep traditional culture alive through song. The community also holds an annual powwow.

Community services include Aboriginal Head Start, a health centre, Baibombeh Anishinaabe School, a women's shelter, youth suicide prevention, housing and Ontario Works. The Nation also has the Naotkamegwanning Business Corporation.
